Video Compression?
« on: January 05, 2011, 08:11:56 PM »
i have a short video of me running in a track race that i wanna put on youtube but i can't because it's 102MB and the limit is 100mb.

the kicker is it's only 28 seconds long! plus it's an AVI file so it should not be this large. does anyone know of any FREE software to shrink this down?

Thanks!

ffmpeg, x264, virtualdub, the many GUIs to the first two.

Try opening it with MKVToolNix and resaving it as an MKV file. MKV has slightly less overhead than AVI so by doing it that way, rather than actually converting it, you might get 2MB back for free.

Other than that, HDConvertToX or MeGUI will do the job.

What's the difference between compress and convert to you?  You can run videos through 7-zip (and similar) to save a couple of percent of the file size.  For any significant reduction in size you will have to re-encode them.
